Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Made from a special thermoplastic material designed for this application, Invisalign aligners resemble teeth-whitening trays or sports mouthpieces, though they fit much closer to your teeth and are virtually invisible as you wear them. The Invisalign system doesn’t use just one set of aligners, but rather a progressive series that move your teeth from where they are now until you reach perfect alignment.

Traditional orthodontic procedures use braces and other oral appliances to apply controlled force to your teeth — typically using wires, elastic bands, and retainers that are adjusted periodically during visits to your practitioner’s office. Invisalign aligners provide the same controlled force, but with predetermined treatment. Your outcome is determined at the start of treatment, and the Invisalign aligners guide you through with potentially fewer visits to Smile Loft Branch Ave. than you’d have with conventional braces.

How does the Invisalign system work?

First, Invisalign isn’t a system that all dentists can offer. There’s a specialized training process necessary to become an Invisalign provider. At Smile Loft Branch Ave., Dr. Priya not only has this training, she is recognized as an Invisalign preferred provider, offering the highest level of expertise.

Starting from an impression of your teeth, the progression of Invisalign aligners is planned digitally by Dr. Priya, and from her treatment plan, a series of aligners are custom made to fit your teeth. You simply wear the aligners in series, about two weeks per aligner, which gently guide your teeth into optimal position. Invisalign is good for fixing crowded and separated teeth, as well as whole mouth alignments.

How often do I wear the aligners?

Best results come from wearing Invisalign aligners 20-22 hours daily. You can wear the aligners as you work, play, and sleep. You need only remove them to eat and clean your mouth. The more you wear your aligners, the faster your treatment progresses.

Depending on your particular treatment plan, each aligner stage is worn for about two weeks before you progress to the next. Because you simply change to the next aligner, visits to Dr. Priya are only necessary every four to six weeks, as there’s no need for adjustments at each stage of your progress.
